Finding Happiness after Loss: A Story of Healing and Reconnection

When a family member or a close friend dies, we are mourning. We are sad, and we feel the pain of the loss. Sometimes, especially when a young person dies, we feel it is so unfair this person cannot live any longer. How can I dare to be happy when my friend is dead?

A woman in her 40s came to one of my constellation workshops, and she told me about her loss. Her mother died when she was 18 and she was still mourning. She missed her mother there so much. Growing up with her children and in the family was a heaviness and sadness that even the children (who were teenagers now) were impacted by. My client felt it was enough, and she came to the constellation to connect again with the joy of life. For herself and her family. There I asked her to choose representatives for herself, the family members (husband and 2 children) and her mother. She positioned them all next to one another in a line. We have an implicit sense of a timeline and the representative of the mother sensed this was not the right place for her. So, I suggested she step back and take a couple of meters, standing behind the family of her daughter.  Immediately, there was a shift in the whole system. With process work, the client could give place to the sadness but also could connect with her life energy again. For the client it was a very healing process to hear from the representative of the mother, how much she felt happiness when she saw her daughter living her life fully with joy and happiness. That’s a gift for me!

The Healing Process of Systemic Constellation Work

Systemic constellation work offers a profound and transformative approach to addressing deep-seated emotional issues and relational dynamics. This method allows clients to explore and resolve personal and familial patterns that impact their well-being and relationships. By engaging in this process, clients can give place to their sadness and reconnect with their life energy, facilitating healing and growth.

A Healing Journey: Giving Place to Sadness

1. Acknowledging the Pain: In systemic constellation work, the first step is to acknowledge and give space to the client’s emotions, including sadness and grief. This acknowledgement is crucial as it validates the client’s experiences and feelings, creating a safe environment for emotional exploration.

2. Setting Up the Constellation: The client, with the help of a facilitator, sets up a constellation that represents their current issue or emotional state. This might include representatives for the client, family members, and significant emotions like sadness. The physical arrangement of these representatives can reveal hidden dynamics and relationships within the system.

3. Experiencing Emotions: Through the constellation, the client can directly engage with their emotions by stepping into the roles of the various representatives. This experiential approach allows the client to feel and process their sadness in a controlled and supportive setting, providing a cathartic release of pent-up emotions.

4. Reconnecting with Life Energy: In addition to acknowledging sadness, systemic constellation work also helps clients identify and connect with positive forces and energies within their system. This might involve representing elements such as joy, hope, and love, which can support the client’s healing process.

5. Shifting Perspectives & Integrating Positive Insights: By stepping into different roles, clients gain new perspectives on their situation. For example, a client might step into the role of a supportive family member or a positive aspect of themselves. This shift in perspective can help clients see their issues in a new light and recognize sources of strength and resilience. Also, as the client interacts with the constellation, they often receive valuable insights and messages, that can provide comfort and encouragement.

A Safe Space Where Healing to Take Place

1. Emotional Release and Healing: Systemic constellation work provides a safe space for clients to express and release deep emotions, facilitating emotional healing. By giving place to their sadness, clients can process their grief and move towards acceptance and peace.

2. Enhanced Self-Awareness: The process enhances self-awareness by revealing hidden dynamics and unconscious patterns. Clients gain a deeper understanding of their emotions and relationships, empowering them to make informed and positive changes.

3. Strengthened Relationships: Through this work, clients can improve their relationships by developing empathy and understanding for others. Recognizing the interconnectedness of their emotions and actions fosters more compassionate and supportive interactions.

4. Empowerment and Vitality: Reconnecting with life energy revitalizes clients, empowering them to pursue their goals and aspirations with renewed vigour. This sense of empowerment is essential for personal growth and fulfilment.

Systemic constellation work is a powerful therapeutic tool that enables clients to address and heal deep emotional wounds. By giving place to sadness and reconnecting with their life energy, clients can experience profound healing and transformation. This process not only helps in resolving past traumas but also fosters a renewed sense of vitality and empowerment, allowing clients to live their lives more fully and joyfully. Engaging in systemic constellation work can be a pivotal step towards emotional well-being and personal growth, offering lasting benefits for those seeking healing and positive change.
