Systemic Constellation, also known as Family Constellation, is a therapeutic and experiential approach that originated in family therapy but has been applied in various areas of personal and organizational development. Developed by the German psychotherapist Bert Hellinger in the late 20th century, the method is based on the understanding that people are profoundly influenced by their family and other social systems.
The main principles and components of Systemic Constellations include:
- Systemic perspective: Systemic constellations operate from a systemic perspective, which means that they consider individuals as part of larger systems (e.g., family, organization, community). The dynamics within these systems can have an impact on an individual’s thoughts, emotions and behaviours.
- Representative figures: In a typical constellation session, participants are chosen to represent elements of the client’s problem or question. These representatives are in specific positions to each other, creating a “living map” that represents the systemic dynamics at play.
- The Order of Love: Bert Hellinger identified the “Order of Love” that guides healthy family systems. These include principles such as belonging, hierarchy and balance. Constellations seek to identify and rectify disruptions to restore harmony.
- Unconscious loyalties and entanglements: Constellations explore unconscious loyalties and entanglements within a system. These may involve unresolved issues or traumas affecting current generations. By bringing these dynamics to light, people can gain insights and work towards resolution.
- Healing and resolution: the process aims to bring healing by recognizing and respecting the experiences of family members, even across generations. By uncovering hidden dynamics, people can find resolutions and restore balance within the system.
- Although the Family Constellation originally focused on family systems, it has been adapted for use in a variety of contexts, including organizational dynamics, personal development and community issues. The principles can be applied to any system in which relationships play a significant role.
- Experiential and embodied learning: Constellation work is often experiential, engaging participants at a deeper emotional and intuitive level. The physical arrangement of the representatives and the experiential nature of the process can lead to profound insights and changes.
